Going on tour with your band should be an adventurous experience with awesome gigs and silly tour van memories that will last you a lifetime. However, imagine how disruptive it would be to damage or lose your equipment on tour - don’t worry we’ve got your back! Here are our 5 top tips on how to protect your musical equipment on tour:

1. Get comfy – sleep in the van if you can

It really isn’t a good idea to leave your equipment in the van unattended (unless you have secure parking), so make sure that there is some comfy sleeping space available that will enable a couple of you to sleep in the van overnight. We recommend at least two so that you can scare off any unwanted attention together.

2. Be careful - make sure your vehicle is secure

There may be occasions when you need to leave your equipment in the van, so make sure that you are able to conceal your equipment and avoid any obvious markings or stickers that scream “we are in a band and this van is full of expensive equipment’. You also need to be mindful that anyone attending your gig or hovering outside may have seen you load the van, so try to move it to another location clear of the venue ASAP. If you are going for dinner or out for the evening try to keep the van in sight where possible and check on it regularly. Most importantly, make sure your van is locked at all times!

3. Get music insurance for your band

It may seem like a no brainer, but there are thousands of musicians out there carting around expensive gear that isn’t covered for theft or damage. The great thing about our PLAYSAFE music insurance policy is that you can get one music insurance policy that will cover the whole band. This can cost anything from just over £5 a month. We also cover the cost of replacement hire equipment, which could be a life saver if you damage or lose your equipment while you are on tour.

4. Be prepared – Keep pictures and a record of serial numbers

Whether you have music insurance or not, before you leave for your tour take down a note of all serial numbers for your equipment and take some pictures. If you have insurance this will help support your claim and if not, then this will help you prove ownership to the police and enable them to track it down.

5. Think smart and follow your instincts

Ultimately you just need to think smart and follow your instincts. If you are planning on a heavy night make sure there is at least one sober member of the band who can use their noggin and make sure your equipment isn’t at risk. If you are unsure of the neighbourhood, just move it to a more secure location and, whatever you do, don’t ask a seemingly innocent group of fans from your gig to watch over it for you.
